In response to negative feedback from the game’s Play First Trial, Electronic Arts have announced that the cost of hero characters in Star Wars Battlefront Ii will be reduced by 75 percent.
“Luke Skywalker and Darth Vader will now be available for 15,000 credits, Emperor Palpatine, Chewbacca, and Leia Organa for 10,000 credits, and Iden at 5,000 credits,” DICE executive producer John Wasilzyk said in a post on EA’s official site.
“Based on what we’ve seen in the trial, this amount will make earning these heroes an achievement, but one that will be accessible for all players,” he added. The changes are now live.
This is just the latest damage control move EA has had to make in recent weeks to address criticisms of Star Wars Battlefront II, most of which stem from the game’s controversial business model involving “pay-to-win” loot boxes. After the first 10 hours of the game were made available through EA Access last Friday, a fan did some calculations and determined it would take roughly 40 hours to unlock the 60,000 in-game credits required to purchase just one hero. This prompted a response from a developer, which quickly became the most downvoted post in Reddit history. And while most of the responses have been fair and civil, some have crossed the line into harassment and full-blown death threats.
“So I’m up to 7 death threats, and over 1600 individual personal attacks now (and yes, for legal reasons I’m keeping track),” said one EA developer on Twitter “And why, you might ask? Because of an unpopular feature in a game.”
