The RG351V has been one of ANERBNIC’s most anticipated handhelds. Ever since the successful launch of the RG351M collectors and gamers are after a vertical form factor to go with it.
Just like the classic Retro Game 300 that came out years ago, this uses a very Gameboy-like design with shoulder buttons at the back and a new analogue stick on the face.
As of 8th March 2021 the handheld has been officially revealed and is for sale on AliExpress for $116, it comes in a plastic wood grain, a charcoal transparent black, and a grey.
Due to the name “351V” this gives us an indication of some specs, because they have also used this on their previous handhelds.
The “35” means that they are most likely using a 3.5″ Display, and the “V” means it’s a vertical form factor. In terms of specs it’s using the same internals as a RG351P.
- 3.5″ IPS Display (640 x 480)
- Quad Core 1.5GHZ CPU (RK3326)
- Mali-G31 MP2 GPU
- 1GB RAM
- 3900MAH Battery
What Does It Look Like?
The video above will give you a rough idea about the layout of the RG351V handheld. It’s bigger than your traditional horizontal handheld, the unit is thick at the bottom and thins out behind the screen to make space for the flare shoulder buttons.
This is a neat feature and we’re so happy they didn’t have shoulder buttons like that of the PiBoy DMG. The buttons and sticks used look identical to the RG351P, except with one less stick.
It’s also good to see that the analogue stick sits inside of the shell, meaning it won’t catch on your pockets when you take it in and out.
It has two USB-C ports, two SD card slots (one for software/OS, one for ROMs) and if you look carefully, it could have four shoulder buttons.
It seems as if two of the shoulder buttons raise out of the shell a bit more, making it easier to distinguish them both when gaming.
We would have like to see the speaker grill lower into the corner, a bit like the classic Gameboy, just to give a nod to the handheld that started it all.
What Can It Emulate?
It’s most likely going to emulate everything it’s predecessors can, which are the following:
- DC (not well)
- NEOGEO POCKET
- Capcom 1/2/3
Overall the RG351V is looking promising. It’s a large vertical handheld that features a single analogue stick for those of you that prefer it to the DPAD.
The shoulder buttons are unique, almost like the upcoming GKD Mini, they’re close together, and tucked away, hopefully its not a problem for adults with large hands.
We do need to mention the ever inreasing price tag of ANERBNIC’s products. Originally they started at around $50, now they’re squeezing past the $120 mark. Yes, they’re getting slightly more powerful, but the chips and technology used is still very old.
Why these prices are going up is anyones guess, but it’s most likely due to the ever increasing popularity of these products, the best retro handhelds list is forever growing.
