Sony pushes Tom Holland-fronted Uncharted back a week

On the heels of pushing back the release of another video game adaptation in its upcoming schedule, Sony has announced that the long-awaited Tom Holland-starring adaptation of Naughty Dog’s Uncharted is moving back a week from its original February 11, 2022 release date.

It’s currently unclear as to why the studio elected to shift the film’s release back for an eighth time, though one possibility could be that studio Columbia Pictures is looking to space out their releases in the early months of 2022, as Escape Plan 2 is currently slated for a January 7 release while the Jared Leto-starring Morbius is slated for January 21, not to mention the original February 11 date would have pit the film against 20th Century Studios’ Death on the Nile.

Taking inspiration from both a sequence of Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception, in which young thief Nathan Drake (Holland) first meets future partner Victor Sullivan (Wahlberg), and the fourth installment in the game franchise, A Thief’s End, the film is helmed by Zombieland and Venom director Ruben Fleischer on a script from Men in Black: International duo Art Marcum & Matt Holloway and Rafe Judkins (The Wheel of Time) based on a story put together by the trio and previous director Dan Trachtenberg (10 Cloverfield Lane), Mark D. Walker and John Hanley Rosenberg.

Alongside Holland and Wahlberg (Spenser Confidential), the ensemble roster for the film includes Oscar nominee Antonio Banderas (The Mask of Zorro), Grey’s Anatomy alum Sophia Ali and Chilling Adventures of Sabrina vet Tati Gabrielle.

Naughty Dog and Sony Interactive’s first title in the game franchise, Drake’s Fortune, centered on the treasure-hunting descendant of explorer Sir Francis Drake as he believes he has learned the whereabouts of El Dorado, the fabled South American golden city, from a cursed golden statue and engages in a competitive search against a rival hunter, which escalates when creatures — actually mutated descendants of Spaniards and Nazis — begin attacking those hoping to learn the treasure’s true secrets.

Previous drafts of the film were touched by the likes of Mark Boal (The Hurt LockerZero Dark Thirty), Oscar nominee David O. Russell, Doctor Strange‘s Thomas Dean Donnelly and Joshua Oppenheimer, Safe House‘s David Guggenheim and Joe Carnahan.

Travis Knight (Bumblebee) became the sixth director to leave the project in its decade-long development cycle which began with Russell attached to direct followed by Neil Burger (Limitless), Seth Gordon (Baywatch), Shawn Levy (Free Guy) and Trachtenberg.

Uncharted, which is an Arad/Atlas Entertainment Production and produced by Charles Roven, Avi Arad and Alex Gartner, is set to hit theaters on February 18, 2022.
